Borocay Island reopened for tourists to visit after being shut down for 6 months after the Philippines President called it a ‘cesspool’. The island was shut down to clean the island up after many hotels were found breaking environmental laws by dumping raw sewerage into the waters of Borocay.
Many of the hotels have not reopened as they are yet to meet the stringent environment standards the government has set. Only about 1/3 of the hotels have reopened. To gain entry to Borocay Island you need to have a reservation at one of the approved hotels operating on the island.
