Koh Phi Phi, Thailand – The Ultimate 2025/2026 Guide to Paradise (Still Wild, Still Beautiful)
Koh Phi Phi isn’t just an island. It’s a postcard that came to life, a place that somehow survived the 2004 tsunami, Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Beach” fame, and decades of backpacker chaos to remain one of the most breathtaking archipelagos on Earth. In 2025/2026, the six-island group (only two inhabited) is cleaner, greener, and more regulated than ever, yet it still delivers that raw, heart-stopping beauty that made it legendary. The Phi Phi Islands sit 40 km south of Krabi and 45 km west of Phuket in the Andaman Sea, technically part of Krabi province. The main island, Koh Phi Phi Don, is the only one with accommodation and nightlife. The smaller, uninhabited Koh Phi Phi Leh is the cinematic star – home to Maya Bay, the Viking Cave, and those impossibly turquoise lagoons. Four smaller islands (Koh Yung, Koh Pai, Bida Nok, and Bida Nai) are pure dive sites with no land access.
First Impressions – Still a Jaw-Dropper
Your ferry rounds the corner and suddenly two limestone cathedrals rise straight out of the sea, draped in jungle, with a narrow isthmus of white sand connecting them like an hourglass. Tonsai Village sprawls across that isthmus – a maze of bars, dive shops, tattoo parlours, and bungalows. It’s busy, loud, and unapologetically touristy, yet five minutes’ walk in any direction and you’re on a quiet beach with only the sound of waves and longtail boats. That contrast is Koh Phi Phi’s magic: chaos and serenity within 100 metres.
The Beaches – From Iconic to Secret
- Maya Bay (Phi Phi Leh) – The Beach. Reopened with strict limits (3,800 visitors/day, no swimming in the main bay), but still the most photographed spot in Thailand. Arrive before 8 AM or after 4 PM on a private longtail to have it almost to yourself.
- Long Beach – Phi Phi Don’s best-kept secret. 15-minute walk or 50-THB longtail from Tonsai. Powdery sand, crystal water, and bioluminescent plankton at night.
- Loh Dalum Bay – The main party beach opposite Tonsai. Fire shows, bucket bars, and sunsets that turn the sky neon.
- Laem Tong – Quiet northern village with Ao Poh Bay – golden sand, calm water, and a handful of luxury resorts.
- Nui Beach – Remote, rocky, but with a hidden cove that’s pure paradise (30-minute hike or boat).
Activities – More Than Just Partying
- Diving & Snorkelling – World-class. Shark Point, Anemone Reef, and Bida Islands teem with blacktip reef sharks, turtles, and macro life. Visibility 15–30 m in high season (Nov–Apr). PADI courses from 12,000–14,000 THB.
- Viewpoints – Three official ones. Viewpoint 1 & 2 are easy 20-minute climbs (100 THB entry). Viewpoint 3 (highest) rewards with 360° panoramas.
- Rock Climbing – Limestone cliffs everywhere. Half-day courses from 1,500 THB.
- Boat Tours – Longtail or speedboat around Phi Phi Leh (Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave). Private longtail ~2,500–4,000 THB/day.
- Kayaking & SUP – Rent for 300–500 THB/hour and explore hidden coves.
Nightlife – Still Wild, But Smarter
Tonsai and Loh Dalum are the epicentre. Bars like Slinky, Ibiza Pool Party, and Banana Rooftop keep the party going till sunrise. Fire shows every night, bucket drinks from 250 THB, and a laid-back vibe that somehow never feels dangerous. In 2025, new regulations mean no beach drinking after 10 PM in some areas, but the bars simply moved 20 metres inland – the energy is unchanged.Where to Stay in 2025/2026
