June 2, 2019Ikinari Steak House is a great value steak restaurant in the heart of Tokyo. While a lot of restaurants in Tokyo that serve steak are at the high end with very expensive prices, Ikinari has very reasonable prices for some good quality and well cooked steaks. Ikinari Steak House Ginza Tokyo This is the place to come for cheap steak in Ginza, as there is nothing else on the menu other than steak! This is a very casual dining restaurant, with high tables and chairs. Inside Ikinari Steak House Ginza When you are ready to order, you need to walk up to the kitchen and tell the chef what steak and what weight of the steak you want. He will cut off the slab of meat and weigh it in front of you so you see you are getting the correct weight that you ordered. The Chef at Ikinari Steak House Ginza The steaks come out sizzling hot on a oven heated iron plate. They do provide a paper bib so your clothes are not splattered with the lovely steak sizzle. When you are eating, you can ask the waiter to send the metal grill back to be heated up again to ensure your steak stays hot while you are eating it. Steak at Ikinari Steak House Ginza Soup and salad at Ikinari Steak House Ginza On each table is a selection of different steak condiments including Tabasco sauce, mustard and a big jug of their own, home made steak sauce which I must say is delicious. The steak I had was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I ate most of my steak with no condiments or the steak sauce, as it tasted great on it’s own. Steak Condiments at Ikinari Steak House Ginza Big jug of steak sauce at Ikinari Steak Restaurant I had 300 grams of Australian beef sirloin steak which cost 2,460 Yen which is a really good price for steak in Tokyo. The best pick of the nigiri set meals is the ‘Omakase’ which is a selection of 14 pieces of sushi selected by the head chef, choosing the best fish available for the day. June 7, 2018Tempura Kondo Restaurant is a Michelin star restaurant located in the heart of Ginza, the high end fashion area of Tokyo Japan. Infact Kondo restaurant has been awarded 2 stars for the last few years, making it the best Tempura restaurant in Tokyo. It was first awarded 2 stars in 2009 and has kept that status until now, 2015. The Michelin guide awards 1 star for very good cooking in that category and Michelin recommends you should visit that restaurant. 2 stars is awarded for excellent cooking and it is worth to go out of your way to get to the restaurant! Tempura Kondo Restaurant Ginza Tokyo You don’t really have to go out of your way to get to Kondo Restaurant as it is located just a few minutes’ walk from Ginza Subway Station. The price for the meal may be the deciding point for most people going to this restaurant. The minimum for a set meal (dinner) at Kondo Restaurant costs 10,000 Yen, that is around US$82 per person. The restaurant has a great ambience, with 2 rooms with wooden counters which seats 12 people. You are sitting at the counter watching the chefs prepare your meal. The use good quality sesame oil which they change regularly throughout the night to ensure the oil is at its best for frying the tempura. All the vegetables are sourced from around Japan. Dining area at Kondo Tempura Restaurant I went there with a friend and we both ordered the Kaede Course (12,000 Yen) which consists of Appetizer (2 Japanese dishes), Tempura (2 x prawns, 6 types of vegetables and 4 different types of fish and a final dish of Kakiage which is a mixture of bits of prawn/shrimps fried in batter and served on a bowl of rice. We also paid an extra 500 Yen to include the special sweet potato tempura dish. The appetizer we received was a bit surprising. Raw sashimi which included a large sea snail with a conical shell. You use a tooth pick to extract the large raw snail from it’s shell. As I extracted it I wonder who was the first person to find this and decide that it could be eaten raw. After being polite and chewing away at this raw, slimey snail I continued to wonder why people continue to eat this weird looking creature! The rest of the meal was all good after this! Sashimi at Tempura Kondo Restaurant Raw sea snail at Kondo Tempura Restaurant The Tempura was the star of the meal. First up the prawn head was served up all crunky. Then the prawns themselves made an appearance and were truly excellent tempura. Each dish was prepared separately and served up individually, through the prawns, different fish and the various vegetables, most of which I was not familiar with. All the tempura dishes were excellent. Tempura set meal at Kondo Restaurant Tokyo Japanese Vegetable at Tempura Kondo Restaurant Tempura Prawn at Kondo Restaurant Just before the Kakiage came out, they finished up the tempura meal with the sweet potato. This was a huge chunk of sweet potato. I was quite nice for the first few bites but after this it was quite dry in the middle and not so enjoyable. Even my Japanese friend left most of her sweet potato. Sweet Potato Tempura Kakiage tempura with bowl of rice You definitely do not walk out of Tempura Kondo feeling hungry. Infact it is a load of food for 1 person and I seemed to waddle out of the restaurant content with a full belly. All up the meal takes more than 1.5 hours so not a place for a quick bite to eat. Was the extra cost to eat at a Michelin star restaurant worth it? Probably not. The meal was very nice. I wouldn’t say it was totally excellent. I have eaten at plenty of other tempura restaurants in Tokyo and think those meals were almost as good, at around half the cost. It is very nice to say that I have eaten in Tempura Kondo and to experience a 2 star Michelin restaurant though next time I am hungry for Tempura I’ll probably visit somewhere else. October 13, 2016I love Shanghai Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) so I was pleasantly surprised to find Paradise Dynasty Restaurant in Ginza on my last visit to Tokyo. A famous Chinese restaurant from Singapore, Paradise Dynasty restaurant specializes in Shanghai Soup Dumplings. Some describe Paradise Dynasty as serving the tastes of Singapore! Well Chinese Singapore! Located right next to Ginza Subway Station, take exit C8 and you will find yourself right next to Paradise Dynasty restaurant I went in to Paradise Dynasty on a Saturday night for dinner. I got there early, at 6pm and had no problems getting a table. I ordered an entrée of Spicy Szechuan Chicken and their signature dish, a selection of the various flavours of Shanghai Soup Dumpling. I was not expecting the Spicy Szechan Chicken dish to be served cold, it was like it was straight from the fridge but surprisingly it was really tasty even though it was cold. The Shanghai Soup dumplings are served in a large bamboo steamer. Each dumpling has a different colour, which equals a different flavor. The flavours include Original, Steamed Foie Gras, Steamed Black Truffle, Steamed Crab Roe, Steamed Ginseng, Steamed Cheesy, Steamed Garlic and Steamed Szechuan . To me they all taste mostly the same, a little bit of different flavor in the dumpling skins but the same yummy pork mince inside the dumpling with the traditional soup that oozes out when you bite into the dumplings. As well as having restaurants in Singapore. Paradise Dynasty also has restaurants in Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Hong Kong, Jakarta, and in Bali.
