April 30, 2024Marinades Indian Restaurant is located overlooking the Cairns Marina. A traditional Indian restaurant serving all your classic Indian curries, chutneys and meat and seafood cooked in the Tandoor oven. The outdoor dining area (is under cover) does have a lovely view over the Cairns Marina. Marinades Indian Restaurant Cairns View from Marinades Indian Restaurant Cairns I had a real craving for Indian food when I was staying in Cairns. I was staying at the Hilton Hotel so it was just a short stroll along the Cairns Marina to the restaurant. I did make a booking via their website through the day but don’t think I needed to. The restaurant was busy but not all the tables were full. There was a QR code on the table which allowed you to order and pay for the meal via an app via your mobile phone. I didn’t mind doing this and know that it saves the restaurant money for staff to take your order, but I really felt this made this restaurant a little impersonal. I had very little to do with the staff other than thank them for when they delivered my food. I guess the big plus of this system was, as soon as I was ready to leave, I just got up and left as I had already paid, so no need to wait for the bill. I had a fairly basic meal but this is all that I wanted during my visit. First up the entree was the Samosa which were tasty. I didn’t want any rice. The chicken was probably a little bit overcooked, with the skin black charcoal which also made the chicken a little bit dry. Also the chicken tandoori arrived but still no naan bread. This was the only time I had to call the attention of a staff member who quickly went and hurried up the kitchen. It did take a few minutes wait before I got the bread. April 24, 2024If you are looking for some good Italian pizza down on the Cairns Marina waterfront, then check out Ollie’s Italian Restaurant which is right on the waterfront, next to Dundee’s Australian Waterfront Restaurant. Ollie’s is your classic, casual dining Italian restaurant serving up authentic Italian food like pizza, pasta, steaks and fresh local seafood. Ollie’s Italian Steakhouse Restaurant Cairns I was set on pizza for lunch and took a stroll along the Marina and came across Ollie’s. I got there just on midday and had a pick of the seats within the restaurant. There are tables and chairs right out the front of the restaurant, with good views over the Marina waterfront. The pizza at Ollie’s is traditional Neapolitan pizza also known as Naples-style pizza. The pizza crust is a pillowy and chewy and is topped with fresh tomatoes (instead of a tomato paste or sauce) and the cheese they use is fresh mozzarella cheese. Ollie’s Italian Restaurant Cairns The oven in Ollie’s kitchen is a unique charcoal oven (Josper which comes from Spain). With no electricity or gas, the burning charcoal heats the oven to 500 degrees cooking the food quickly, sealing in the natural flavours of the food. The pizza get a nice smokey taste for this process. I recently went back to get take-away pizza from Ollie’s. I was staying at the Hilton which is right next door. I wandered over early, about 5.45pm, ordered, they started making it straight away and it was ready within 15 minutes. Great quick service. This take away pizza looked even better than the previous pizza I had dine in. April 17, 2024I have been on the search to find the best burgers in Cairns, There are plenty of great burger joints in Cairns but where do you find the best? Where here, in my opinion, are the best burgers in Cairns: Cairns Burger Cafe Tucked away at the back of the Cairns CBD on Aplin Street, is the unassuming Cainrs Burger Cafe. What looks like an old 1970s Milk Bar, this burger cafe in my opinion, serves up the best and tastiest burgers in Cairns! Best Burgers Cairns – Cairns Burger Cafe I went for their classic Aussie burger which comes with a good quality Aussie beef pattie, cheese, bacon, egg, grilled onion, grilled pineapple, avacoda, lettuce, beetroot with tomato sauce and comes with a side of chips for $24. Aussie Burger at Cairns Burger Cafe There is alot going on in this burger but it all works. Even with such a loaded burger, you can still taste all the elements of the burger. You get the well seasons beef flavour, feel the creamy cheese, get the sweet hit from the beetroot and pineapple and the crunch from the lettuce. If you only get to have 1 burger in Cairns, then this is the one you should have! Check out the Cairns Burger Cafe website. Jimmy’s Burger & Co Jimmy’s is definitely the coolest burger joint in town! A huge dining establishment with outdoor dinning as well as air-conditioned dining in a very well decked out dining room with loads of wooden tables and booths. At the front of the restaurant is a fully decked out bar inviting you to stay around for a few drinks and enjoy the very cool music they play. Jimmy’s Burger and Co Cairns Jimmy’s Burger & Co serve up top quality American style burgers, simple but delicious! I went for their Jimmy’s Classic burger which comes with an Angus beef patty (very tasty), cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and Jimmy’s special burger sauce. At $20,90, just for the burger, it works out a bit more expensive, and the burger is on the small side (much smaller than the burger I had at Cairns Burger Cafe). To add a side of chips is an extra $10, so $30.90 for a burger and chips puts this place on the expensive side but with great service, tasty burgers and the coolest burger joint in Cairns, they definitely deserve their place in the top 5 best burger joints in Cairns. Chocolate Milkshake at Jimmy’s Burgers Cairns Hello Harry Burger Joint Cairns Hello Harry Burger Joint is located right in the heart of Cairns, on the Esplanade, across from the waterfront. This is an awesome burger joint They do have some seriously good tasting burgers coming out the kitchen! Inside Hello Harry The Burger Joint Cairns Trying to keep things standard, I also went for the Aussie burger at Hello Harry and was not disappointed. So much going on, so many flavours popping in my mouth. This classic Aussie burger has a nice thick juicy, grass fed beef patty, BBQ glaze, bacon, egg, cheese, beetroot, cos lettuce, tomato and mayo. I love how the egg was runny, getting the ooze of egg yolk through the burger. Tasty Burgers in Cairns The Aussie Burger at Hello Harry Burger Joint Cairns This is only a small burger joint with just a few tables inside.. There are more tables and chairs out the front of the restaurant but totally undercover. Read more about the Seriously Good Burgers at Hello Harry. Milky Lane Burgers Milky Lane is located down the the Cairns Esplanade, across from the waterfront. The Milk Lane chain has popped up restaurants over the last few years in Sydney, Melbourne and now in Queensland and they do serve a mighty fine range of tasty burgers. Here I went for their classic Milky Lane Burger ($19) which comes with 2 smashed beef patties, double American Cheese, lettuce, pickles, diced onion, tomato with their original burger sauce and tomato sauce. I added a slice of grilled pineapple for an extra $4, just beacuase I like pineapple on a burger and it sort of makes this an unoffical Aussie burger, minus the beetroot! This was a very tasty burger. So much flavour coming from the well seasoned beef, the cheese, the sauce and that sweet sweet contrast from the pineapple. The only thing about this burger is that it was very messy to eat. After the first coupld of bites the burger integrity diminished and the everything started falling out of the burger onto my plate. I had to resort to cutlery to finish eating the burger but this did not impact the flavours! Still a delicious meal. A messy burger in a very tasty way! Check out the Milky Lane Website. Milky Lane Burger with pineapple Ochre Modern Australian Restaurant I went down to the Cairns Marina to try out a burger at a fine dining restaurant to compare to the classic burger joints in town. I went in for lunch at Ochre Modern Australia Restaurant and was not disappointed with their burger. Ochre Modern Ausrtralia Restaurant Cairns On their lunch menu they have the Ultimate Aussie burger which comes with premium beef mince, Turkish bun (not your typical burger bun but this was a pleasant change), bacon, beetroot, Mungalli cheddar,pickles, salad and bush tomato aioli and side of onion rings. The only thing missing to really make it an Aussie burger was the pineapple! Ultimate Aussie Burger at Ochre Modern Australian Restaurant Cairns Wow what a burger! As I said above, the long Turkish bun is not what I expected for a burger but it was a very good substitute. What hit me about this burger was the awesome flavour coming from the beef. This was top quality beef and they hit it with some sound seasoning, I got a very big peppery flavour from it which worked so well with the strong Aussie beef flavour. All the other flavours from the bacon, beetroot, strong cheddar cheese made this a very enjoyable burger. Ulatimate Aussie Burger at Ochre Restaurant Cairns At $25 this was quite reasonably priced. Considering this is served in a fine dining reestaurant, right on Cairns Marina with this breaktaking view from my seat! It also came with chips and onion rings, bonus! The amazing view of Cairns Marina Blu Marlin Bistro – Cairns Marina Just down from Ochre, is one of the most popular cafe / bistros on the Marina – Blu Marlin Birsto. This place is always packed for breakfast, lunch and dinner so I knew they must be serving up some great food. I went in for a burger but found the only burger on the menu was a chicken burger, still a burger, and it was a very tasty chicken burger! Blu Marlin Bistro Cairns Marina This was a crispy deep fried chicken breast served with cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato and a mayo sauce. I do like a nice crispy chicken burger for a change now and then! Chicken Burger at Blu Marlin Bistro Cairns Marina Tasty Chicken Burger on Cairns Marina The menu at Blu Marlin changes regularly. As I write this, I see their menu does have a beef burger now and their crispy chicken burger that I had, has not changed to an Asian Chicken Burger. I am sure both very tasty. I enjoyed this chicken burger so much, I came back to Blu Marlin Bisto next morning for breakfast to try their big breakfast. This is another dish I can highly recommend. January 9, 2023Buffet Breakfast is served in the Atrium Restaurant at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Cairns between 6.30am – 9.30am. The Buffet costs $26 for a Continental Breakfast (everything except the hot food). The full buffet costs $36 which includes everything on the multiple food stations including the hot food section. Hot Food Buffet Breakfast at Atrium Restaurant Doubletree by Hilton Cairns I stayed at Doubletree by Hilton Cairns in December 2022. I went in on the first morning to check out the buffet. I am not a big fan of paying for a buffet breakfast. There are usually cheaper options to get breakfast at cafes close by to the hotel. If breakfast is including then I love a good buffet breakfast but if I am paying for it I don’t think I ever get good value out of it. I paid the $26 for the continental breakfast and only had 2 slices of toast, a muffin, a glass of orange juice and a coffee. Definitely not worth $26. Fresh Fruit Buffet Breakfast at Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Cairns If you’ve got a big appetite then this is a very good buffet with multiple food stations including breads, pastries and muffins, a salad bar with cold meats, a fresh fruit station, loads of breakfast cereals and yoghurts and a hot food station with all the usually sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, baked beans and grilled tomatoes. They also got a machine which makes freshly cooked pancakes. Bread and Pastries at Buffet Breakfast at Atrium Restaurant Cairns Cereals Buffet Breakfast at Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Cairns Salad and Cold Meats Buffet Breakfast at Doubletree by Hilton Cairns Fruit Juices at Atrium Restaurant in Doubletree by Hilton Cairns Pancake Machine at Atrium Restaurant at Doubletree by Hilton Cairns I stayed at DoubleTree by Hilton in Cairns for 8 nights in December 2022. I was impressed with the hotel but only got to the buffet breakfast once. Most other mornings I went over to Muddy’s Cafe , which is only 350 meters along the Esplande from the hotel. At Muddy’s I would either get a bacon and egg roll or just toast with a coffee. This is a much cheaper option for breakfast than a hotel buffet. January 4, 2023Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Cairns is a very nice 4.5 star hotel located at the northern end of the Cairns Esplanade waterfront. The Doubletree has 2 of it’s own restaurants, The Atrium Restaurant is at the front of the hotel, next to the reception area and is where the buffet breakfast is served. Out the back of the hotel grounds is Vine Room which is open in the evenings serving a good range of Tapas plates. There are also loads of great restaurant walking distance from the Doubletree by Hilton in Cairns. Check out these restaurants which are sorted by top recommendation, rather than distance: Dundees At The Aquarium Dundee’s At The Aquarium in Cairns My top recommendation and also one of the closes restaurants, diagonally across the road from the DoubleTree, so just 1 minutes walk from the hotel. Dundees At The Aquarium is a Fine Dining restaurant serving a selection of Australian cuisine. Prices are not cheap here so probably a good restaurant for a special occasion, or any occasion you want some delicious food. I got in there 2 times to have a steak and a chicken schnity. Good value and great tasting food. I went in for their most popular dish, the Nasi Goreng Fried rice with chicken satay and was very impressed. Cheap food and very tasty. If you love spicy Indonesian food, this place is a must visit during your stay in Cairns. January 1, 2023Villa Romana Trattoria is one of the best Italian restaurants in Cairns, located on the Esplanade, directly across from the Cairns Waterfront, near the Cairns Lagoon. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is the place to come for excellent pizza, pasta, steak and seafood. Villa Romana Trattoria Italian Restaurant Cairns I got into to eat at Villa Romana Trattoria in December 2022, my most recent visit to Cairns. First time I went in for lunch and had to try their pizza. Well pizza is one of the 5 major food groups! Villa Romana’s Pizzas and Calzones are naturally risen for 48 hours which gives the best pizza crust. They are 100% hand made in Villa Romana’s kitchen and cooked Neapolitan style, in their Italian made Cuppone Pizza Oven. I went for their Pepperonata Pizza which comes topped with just cacciatore salami, roasted red capsicum and a sprinkle of cheese. A very simple pizza but very tasty! December 26, 2022The Bistro at Cairns RSL Club serves up some delicious food, all your classic pub grub meals like steaks, chicken schnitzel, roast dinners and burgers. Located directly opposite the Cairns waterfront on Cairns Esplanade. This is a great Bistro serving food at very reasonable prices. Great Food at Cairns RSL Club I got into Cairns RSL 2 times on my recent visit to Cairns. First time I went in for lunch and had their Rump Steak ($28) which comes with chips and slaw or mash and vegetable. I just went with some slaw, passed on the chips as I had a big week of eating ahead of me. This rump was one of the best steaks I have eaten in a long time. The steak was seasoned perfectly. I had some pepper sauce with the steak but I ate most of the steak without the sauce as it tasted so good. This was top quality beef which is not that much of a surprise as Far North Queensland does produce some of the best beef in the world. Rump Steak at the Bistro in Cairns RSL Later in the week I went back and had their classic chicken schnitzel which comes with a slice of lemon, chips and slaw or the mash and veg. I did go for the chips this time and glad I did. The chippies were yummy! The schnitzel was a little bit over cooked but still tasted great. The schnitzel is very thin, the way it should be. December 25, 2022Dundee’s Restaurant has 2 locations in Cairns. The main Dundee’s Waterfront Dining Restaurant located down at the Cairns Marina waterfront and their 2nd restaurant is at Cairns Aquarium. I had dined at the Dundee’s Waterfront Restaurant 2 times before, so this visit I went to the Dundee’s At the Aquarium for an excellent dining experience. Dundee’s At The Aquarium in Cairns The food menu is pretty much the same, a selection of Modern Australia food, a selection of seafood, steaks and pasta. The highlight of the indoor dining room is the massive aquarium which is home to over 50 tropical fish. It is so relaxing watching the fishies swim around while you are dining on some excellent food! BTW I didn’t go for the seafood. Seemed a bit wrong eating their cousins! Massive Fish Tank at Dundee’s At The Aquarium I went for a very good quality Black Angus Rib Fillet steak ($58) which comes served on top of some creamy mashed potato with sautéed leek, spinach, wild mushrooms, shiraz jus and truffle mayo. One of my pet hates is when food is served on top of food! Chefs please stop doing this! It may look fancy but it is a pain to eat. I quickly took the steak off the pile of mash which made it easier to cut through the steak. Also topping the steak with the sauteed vegetables takes away the excellent view of the steak with chargrilled marks. Show off the excellent quality of the steak, rather than cover it up! Black Angus Eye Fillet Steak at Dundee’s At the Aquarium The first few bites of this expensive steak I was so disappointed as the steak had not been seasoned properly. When I pay $58 for a steak I expect it to be well seasoned. You should be able to eat a steak as it is, just with a bit of salt and pepper seasoning. First few bites were very bland until I added a small sprinkle of salt and pepper and POP! the steak flavour came alive! This was all this steak needed to be an excellent, enjoyable meal. Black Angus Eye Fillet Steak at Dundees at the Aquarium Cairns I struggled to choose a desset (all $19.50) as all the desserts sounded amazing. I wanted the sticky date pudding as I love a sticky date! I also wanted the Pineapple and Coconut Tart as I love a good tart. I ended up having the Bailey’s Lamington Trifle. It was a few days before Christmas as Trifle is a fond memory of Xmas meals usually with a bit too much Cherry! I could barely taste the Bailey’s but overall the dessert was sweet and enjoyable. I actually thought of buying an extra shot of Bailey’s to add to this dessert but ate it as was. December 23, 2022Treasure Court Seafood Restaurant is a nice Chinese / Cantonese restaurant located at the northern end of Cairns, on Florence Street, directly opposite the Cairns Aquarium. At dinner time they have a full al a carte menu serving up all the classic Cantonese dishes. At lunch times they have a Yum Cha menu with loads of different types of Dim Sum dumplings. The prices are reasonable with the dumpling prices ranging from $6.90 – $7.90. Yum Cha Dim Sum in Cairns I went in for lunch on a Friday. This restaurant is popular with local Chinese families and tourists, as I was the only non-Chinese person in the restaurant, which is always an excellent sign of a great Chinese restaurant. I ordered up 3 of my favourite Yum Cha dishes, the Ha Gao Steamed Prawn Dumplings, Xiao Long Bao Shanghai Soup Dumplings and the Char Siu Bao BBQ Pork Buns. All very tasty! Shanghai Soup Dumplings at Treasure Court Chinese Restaurant Cairns BBQ Pork Buns at Treasure Court Seafood Restaurant Cairns The Xiao Long Bao were a bit different from the standard Shanghai Soup Dumplings. There was only a little bit of soup inside (first time I not burnt my mouth eating these!) and the pork was like a pork meat ball which was thick and chewing. I kind of really liked these! December 23, 2022Pho Viet Vietnamese Restaurant is a great ‘cheap eats’ restaurant located in the hearts of Cairns City, on Abbott Street, just up from the Cairns Night Markets. You can get a meal at Pho Viet for under $20. Some of the best Vietnamese food in Cairns. December 22, 2022Bagus Cafe is a small hole in the wall restaurant serving up delicious Indonesian food. Located at the northern end of Cairns Esplanade, directly opposite Muddy’s Playground. Bagus Cafe Indonesian Restaurant Cairns Bagus Cafe Cairns Bagus Cafe has a selection of the most famous Indonesia dishes like nasi goreng fried rice, Beef randang, Ayam goreng fried chicken and gado gado. I went in and had their most popular dish, the Nasi Goreng fried rice with chicken satay. I had 2 sticks of satay with the fried rice which costs $17.90. You can also get it with 4 sticks of satay for $21.90. The fried rice was a bit spicy and they had a side dish of very spicy sambal which gives you the option to mix in with the rice to make it so much more spicy, just like you would get in Indonesia. This was so tasty. I visit Indonesia often and this is just the type of fried rice you get there. December 22, 2022Cairns Night Market is a busy indoor marketplace with loads of different stalls selling a range of locally made arts and crafts, clothing, jewellery, leather products and local goods from the North Queensland region. Open every night of the week starting from 4.30pm through to 10.30pm. As well as good shopping there is loads of food to enjoy. Cairns Night Market in Cairns City CBD The Cairns Night Markets are located in the heart of Cairns between the Esplanade and Abbott Street (See map below). There are entrances at both ends, with a large food court at the entrance of the Esplanade, just opposite the Cairns Lagoon, and small take away food shops at the entrance of Abbott Street. The food court is open from 10am so can go there for late breakfast, lunch or dinner. Some of the best items to buy are the arts and crafts by local artists. There is also a great selection of products from Aboriginal First Nation peoples, products like decorative digeridoos and boomerangs. A great gift to take home. If you only eat one burger during your visit in Cairns, then make sure it is here at Hello Harry – The Burger Joint, located on the Esplanade, directly across from the waterfront. Tasty Burgers in Cairns They got a great selection of different types of beef burgers, chicken burgers, pulled meat burgers and even vegetarian burgers. The burgers range in price from $13 – $25. These are seriously good burgers. I had their Aussie Burger which has so much going on. This classic Aussie burger costs $17 and has a nice thick juicy, grass fed beef patty, BBQ glaze, bacon, egg, cheese, beetroot, cos lettuce, tomato and mayo. If you never had an Aussie burger, with beetroot and an egg, then you got to try this. This is juicy, juicy with burger juice dripping down your hand as you hoe into it. The way a burger should be! December 20, 2022Located in the heart of Cairns City CBD is an awesome fish and chip shop called Fishpoint. This is your classic ‘chippie’ serving up a selection of different types of fish and cheap meals, fish burgers, fish tacos and other seafood delights. Located on the corner of Abbott and Aplin Street, just a block down from the Esplanade. Awesome Fish and Chips in Cairns I went in to try their Fish and Chips and was very impressed! I love a good fish dinner and this was very very high quality at a reasonable price. Inside Fishpoint Restaurant Cairns They have a selection of Fish they use for their fish and chips. A choice of ‘Fish of the Day’ ‘Barramundi’ or the Flake which I went for. The flake was very soft and the batter was excellent. I went for the side of salad and chips which was a huge serving for $19.50. I finished all the fish and salad but couldn’t finish the very generous (and very tasty) chippies. There is the choice of the full buffet breakfast for $39 or there is an al a carte menu with a good range of breakfast meals. July 3, 2022Rattle N Hum is an awesome Aussie style pub / sports bar and Grill located on the Esplanade in the heart of Cairns. This is a casual dining restaurant / bar that is family friendly. The front bar is the sports bar with multiple TVs and a large project screen for showing live sports including AFL, NRL, Cricket, Tennis, Formula 1 racing and the UFC fights. This place also serves a great range of pub food including steaks, burgers, ribs and pizza. On a recent visit to Cairns, my friends and I went in for dinner and had an awesome meal. Inside Rattle N Hum Cairns There is no table service here . You order your drinks at the bar, order your meals at the grill counter or pizza counter and they give you a buzzer which rings when your food is ready and you collect your meal at the counter. The Bar at Rattle N Hum Cairns We had some excellent food. First up a half rack of pork ribs ($30) which comes with chips and salad. The ribs were so tender, with the meat sliding of the bone. June 28, 2022Bang and Grind is an awesome cafe located in the heart of Cairns on Spencer Street, open for breakfast and lunch, Monday to Saturday. All their breakfast meals are available at lunch time too. Bang and Grind Cafe Spencer Street Cairns I was ‘working’ remotely at the Pullman Cairns Hotel (better than working from home) which is just around the corner from Bang and Grind Cafe. I went in most mornings and tried to work through their breakfast menu. I did not quite get through the entire menu which gives me a great reason to get back and work remote from Cairns again. Inside Bang and Grind Cafe Cairns This is a great Aussie cafe, friendly staff, great coffee – choice of 2 blends, smooth or strong and they got some awesome breakfast meals. There is a counter at the front which has ready made sandwiches, cakes or yoghurt cups or you can order meals off the menu and the food is cooked to order. Food at Bang and Grind Cafe Cairns The 2 best meals I had during my weeks stay was their big breakfast and their brekky banana split. The big breakfast comes with 2 poached eggs, Bacon, 1/2 Kransky sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and Turkish bread toasted $19.90. This was a big feed, all very tasty. Big Breakfast at Bang and Grind Cafe Cairns The Brekky Banana Split was another great breakfast, very healthy as well as delicious. This had a large Queensland Banana with homemade granola, yoghurt, Berry compote and roasted coconut $14.50. Delicious! June 27, 2022Flinders Bar and Grill is located within The Reef Hotel Casino in the heart of Cairns. This is a great restaurant serving up some great pub food like burgers, steaks, fish and chips and a delicious steak sandwich. The prices are quite reasonable at Flinders Bar and Grill, with you being able to get a good feed from 11am though to midnight. Flinders Bar and Grill Cairns I had eaten at Flingers Bar and Grill a few times on previous visits to Cairns and enjoyed their North Indian Butter Chicken ($17) and their Homemade Steak and Guinness Pie (17) sorry no pics! The steak sandwich is $17 and comes with a high quality 100 gram Scotch Fillet steak, crispy smoked bacon, tomato, lettuce, cheese, caramelised onions, beetroot, BBQ sauce, aioli and a generous serve of thick beer battered fries. The steak was perfectly cooked. This came with a choice or salad, chips or mashed potato. I went with the chips and salad. Rump Steak at Flinders Bar and Grill A few nights later I had their Wagyu Beef Burger which was another excellent choice. This Burger was huge! Wagyu Beef Burger at Flinders Bar and Grill Cairns Finally I tried their North Indian Butter Chicken which comes with rice and naan bread. This was a bit disappointing. The curry was very watery and not a lot of flavour. It was ok but think best to go to an Indian restaurant if you want a good traditional curry. North Indian Butter chicken at Flinders Bar and Grill I did finish this meal with an excellent slice of delicious Raspberry Cheesecake. This made up for the ordinary curry. This is a great bakery that make all their own meat pies, sausage rolls, cakes and pastries onsite. This place is always busy with locals going to get their fix of good quality, tasty, Aussie meat pies. June 26, 2022Muddy’s Cafe is one of the most popular cafes in Cairns, located on the Esplanade overlooking the waterfront, with a great range of breakfast and lunch/dinner cafe food, great coffee, freshly squeezed juices, friendly staff, making it one of the best cafes in Cairns. This Cafe gets real busy so phone ahead and make a reservation or get in early. ‘Muddy’s Cafe Cairns Promenade Each time I am in Cairns, I walk along the waterfront and walk past Muddy’s Cafe and it is usually ‘s packed out before 8am for breakfast and by 11.30am for lunch. Front of Muddy’s Cafe Cairns I got in early on a Sunday morning, around 7.30am and there were a few tables available but after I sat down thee were people waiting for tables to come free. I ordered a coffee and the Big Brekky $22.90 which is a massive big breakfast which comes with smoked bacon, fried eggs, hash brown, tomatoes, garlic mushrooms, cheese kransky sausage and toasted ciabatta. This is a huge feed. I am a big eater but I was not able to polish all this off. All very tasty but just got the better of me. Other places would charge $25 or $26 for a feed this big. July 16, 2021Fetta’s Greek Taverna is the best restaurant I have been to in Cairns! Such a great feed. Fetta’s has been serving up delicious Greek food since 1975, so almost 50 years in business, they are definitely one of the best restaurants in Cairns. I went in for dinner with 2 of my friends and we were all so impressed with the delicious food this restaurant serves up. We were greeted out the front of the restaurant by the owner of the restaurant who is a cheerful and friendly fella. We had a huge feast on loads of delicious Greek food. Starting up with the delicious Hummus ($8) with some home made Pita Bread ($4). Along with this we ordered a Greek salad ($13.50). The main meals we ordered from the specials board which was written out in chalk on a board on the wall close to our table. We had the char grilled Pork Belly ($28) which came with veges and lemon honey sauce. Just delicious! We also had the Authentic Mixed Meat Platter ($29.90) which came with Lamb Loin Chops, Chicken Yiros, Beftekia meat balls, Lamb Souvlaki and Lemon Potatoes. A big plate of delicious meat! So good! Fetta’s Greek Taverna is fully licenced, with a stocked bar in the corner of the restaurant. We polished off quite a few of the awesome Greek Beer called Mythos. Serving up a good range of traditional Thai food for both lunch and dinner. Mai Sai Pak Chee means ‘Do Not Put Coriander’ in the Thai language. While I am a big fan of coriander, I still found the food at Mai Sai Pak Chee to be authentic Thai food, full of flavour. They have some inexpensive lunch specials ($12.90) including the dish I chose, the Chicken Basil with rice with a fried egg. Serving up some classic Italian food including pizza, pasta, steak and seafood. This is a fine dining restaurant with excellent service but the prices are very reasonable. Piccolo Cucina Italian Restaurant Cairns I just had the chance to get in for dinner 1 time while I was staying in Cairns. I was so impressed with the quality of the food and the excellent service from all the staff. I went for a pizza, which is simple and delicious. I had the Diavola Pizza which is just topped with some tomato sauce base, hot salami, fresh chilli and traditional fior di latte mozzarella. July 12, 2021If you are looking for some delicious Japanese Yakiniku BBQ in Cairns then check out Riki Japanese BBQ Restaurant which is located on the 2nd floor of the Orchid Plaza right in the heart of Cairns City Centre. I went in for dinner with 2 of my friends who had never tried Japanese Yakiniku BBQ before. I have eaten it many times in Tokyo and just love this dining experience. The restaurant has loads of booths. They bring a traditional Japanese hot coal BBQ to the table. These are not gas BBQ but the real deal hot coal BBQ just like you find in Japan. Above the table is an exhaust extraction unit to suck away the smoke from the BBQ. The coal BBQ gives the meat and seafood a delicious smokey flavour, much better than the gas BBQs. Hot charcoal BBQ at Riki Japanese We ordered up some plates of chicken, pork belly and some bacon wrapped around some mushrooms. All cooked by ourselves on the charcoal BBQ. Selection of meat at Riki Japanese Yakiniku Restaurant Cairns They give you plates with a dipping sauce, chilli powder and fresh lemon to squeeze on the BBQ meat and seafood. We had the deep fried prawn tempura as well as some awesome deep fried chicken karaage. So good! I give 2 big thumbs up for this awesome Japanese BBQ restaurant in Cairns. As I had some experience with cooking a Japanese BBQ before, we didn’t need any help from the staff. When I went up the front to pay for the meal, the friendly lady at the counter gave me a 10% discount as we cooked the meal ourselves. We didn’t even ask for a discount, she just gave it to us. That is awesome service. A great restaurant, delicious food, excellent dining experience and such friendly staff. 10 out of 10 from us! July 11, 2021I went in for some lunch at the Soy Kitchen Asian Street Food Restaurant at the Cairns Reef Casino and was totally blown away by their Laksa Noodle Soup. This is one of the best laksa noodle soup I have ever eaten, so easy to rank this as the best Laksa Noodle Soup in Cairns City. Best Laksa Noodle Soup in Cairns Soy Kitchen Asian Street Food Restaurant serves up a range of food from all over Asia. From Chinese, Singaporean, Malaysian, Indonesia and Japanese food. A selection of the most famous streets founds in each of those countries. Inside Soy Kitchen When i saw they had laksa on the menu I wasn’t sure they would do this dish justice but I was so pleasantly surprised that the laksa was so good. The laksa soup was so thick and rich, packed full of complex flavours. The chef takes the time to make the soup broth properly. I’d say this is slow simmered for many, many hours to get the thickness and all the right flavours happening in this broth. Thick laksa broth Inside the delicious broth is some awesome, good quality, tender beef, deep fried tofu, boiled egg and topped with some fresh herbs. The noodles are nice and thick. This dish is $17 which seemed a bit expensive but for the quality of the food turned out to be reasonable. This was a big bowl of yummy! July 10, 2021Hungry Wombat is an awesome Japanese restaurant specialising in hand made Udon noodles and tempura. Located in the Orchid Plaza right in the heart of Cairns city centre, between Lake Street and Abbott Street. This is a real hidden gem, serving up some delicious home made udon noodles by a family run restaurant. Hungry Wombat Udon Noodles Cairns This is a very popular Japanese Udon noodle restaurant. I tried to get in here for lunch over a few days but each time I walked past it was packed full of hungry diners enjoying the food. I ended up going in for an early lunch at 11.30am and was able to get a table. Inside Hungry Wombat Japanese Cairns I love Udon noodle soup. I usually go for a Tempura Prawn Udon Noodle Soup but when I saw their signature dish is a stewed beef udon noodle soup I had to try this, and I was so glad I gave it a go. Delicious! Stewed Beef Udon Noodle Soup The stewed beef is slow cooked so the beef is really tender and rich with flavour. The beef just falls apart. The hand made udon noodle are nice and thick and the broth is also packed with flavour. You get a choice of medium or large bowl of the noodle soup. I went for the medium which still quite a reasonable serving, a good size for a lunch time meal. April 12, 2021Pho Viet Vietnamese Noodle Bar is located within the Orchid Plaza Shopping Mall right in the heart of Cairns CBD. Pho Viet serve up a great range of authentic Vietnamese food like Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls, Pho Noodle Soups, Rice dishes and they serve one of the best Banh Mi Vietnamese Bread rolls I have ever eaten. You can enter Orchid Plaza off Lake Street or Abbot Street, just down from Woolworths. Pho Viet Vietnamese Noodle Bar Cairns I had lunch there and went for their Banh Mi Pork Bread roll and was so impressed. This Banh Mi is packed with roast pork which has the most crispy pork crackling which gives this Banh Mi a real crunch to eat. Banh Mi at Pho Viet Vietnamese Noodle Bar Cairns Also on the roll is sliced carrot, coriander, cucumber and I had mine with spicy red chili which gave it a real kick. Serving up delicious Cantonese food, Yum Cha from 11am and al a carte menu service in the evenings. Golden Boat Chinese Restaurant is located on Lake Street, just down from the corner of Spence Street, right in the centre of Cairns. Inside Golden Boat Chinese Restaurant Cairns I went it a few times to Golden Boat Chinese Restaurant. The first time was an early lunch and had some of the best Yum Cha dishes I have eaten in a long time. They had one trolley coming around which had a selection of the fried dumplings. All the steamed dumplings you order of the menu and they cook them up and deliver to your table fresh. Delicious Yum Cha at Golden Boat Chinese Restaurant Cairns I ordered up 3 of my favourite steamed dumplings, the Steamed Prawn Dumplings with 3 pieces ($7.50), the Steamed BBQ Pork Buns with 2 pieces ($6.20) and the delicious Shanghai Pork Dumplings with 3 pieces ($7.50). The prawn dumplings were full of delicious fresh prawns and decent size. The pork dumplings were not exactly the typical Xiao Long Boa Shanghai Soup dumplings, but just plump dumplings packed full of minced pork. The BBQ Pork buns (my favourite Yum Cha dish) were nice and fluffy with real tasty pork with the BBQ sauce. Yum Yum! As a dessert I had the Egg Custard Tart 2 pieces ($6.20) which were also delicious. A great way to finish off a delicious Yum Cha feast.
