KAZE Japanese Restaurant Ao Nang: A Gaijin’s Redemption

KAZE Japanese Restaurant Ao Nang: A Gaijin’s Redemption
Exquisite Japanese spread at KAZE in Ao Nang – Teriyaki Don Buri, crispy Tori Karaage with black vinegar sauce, fresh tofu, miso soup, salad, pickles, cold Asahi beer, and traditional sake!

Look, I’ve been to Japan 24 times – I’m that gaijin who knows his way around a Tokyo izakaya blindfolded. I’ve chased the perfect karaage through Shinjuku alleys and devoured teriyaki don in hole-in-the-wall spots most tourists never find. So when I’m stuck in a beach town like Ao Nang, my expectations for Japanese food are… let’s say realistic.

After a mildly disappointing night at another local spot, I wandered down a quiet side soi off the main Ao Nang road – and holy Mt. Fuji, the walk alone is worth the visit. The view up to the towering Ao Nang rock formation is straight-up dramatic, especially at sunset when the light paints the limestone gold. It’s the kind of backdrop that makes you forget you’re in Thailand for a second.

Then I stepped into KAZE Japanese Restaurant – and the vibe hit different. Waitresses in traditional kimonos, a proper drinks list with sake, shochu, and umeshu… I was cautiously optimistic. (Full disclosure: it’s attached to a hotel, and I usually avoid hotel restaurants like the plague – but every rule has its exception.)

I went straight for a like-for-like comparison: karaage chicken (180 THB). And damn – redemption achieved. Golden, ultra-crispy exterior, juicy meat inside, served with a punchy black vinegar sauce that cut through the richness perfectly. This is the karaage I’d happily eat in Osaka on a weeknight.

Then the Teriyaki Chicken Don (280 THB) arrived, and I actually paused. This wasn’t just chicken on rice – it was a full set: glossy, perfectly glazed teriyaki chicken over fluffy rice, plus miso soup, fresh silken tofu, and a crisp side salad. The sauce had that authentic sweet-savoury balance I chase back home – easily the best teriyaki don I’ve had since the little Japanese kitchen on Military Road in Neutral Bay (right opposite The Oaks back in the 1990s, for my Sydney crew reading this).

Washed it all down with ice-cold Asahi beers and a couple of cups of sake – smooth, no headaches the next morning.

Verdict from a picky Tokyo regular:

KAZE is a legit hidden gem. Ignore the hotel frontage, embrace the kimonos and proper Japanese execution, and you’ve got one of the best Japanese meals in Ao Nang – possibly all of Krabi. I’ll be back before I leave. If you love real Japanese food and find yourself in southern Thailand, do yourself a favour and make the walk down that soi. You won’t regret it.

Arigatou, KAZE – you restored my faith.
